Prestige Trees Landscape Nursery specializes in transplanting and installing large landscape-size shrubs and trees. Transplantation can be performed manually by digging and balling roots with soil or mechanically by using a hydraulic tree spade.

The cost of moving trees twenty to thirty feet tall with a 90” tree spade typically ranges from a low of $500 to more than $2000 in the case of a tree that needs special pre-transplant and post-transplant treatments. Although we may be able to move a 30’ tall pin oak on-site for $1600, that same tree purchased in our nursery retails for $7900 installed. Similarly, the cost of moving a group of 20' white pines on the same site may be $775 per unit, much less than the $2900 retail purchase price of the same tree. The cost of moving a large tree normally accounts for quantity, difficulty, risk and access.

Spade-moving small trees is done using a 44” hydraulic tree spade mounted on the front of a skidloader. This device can safely transplant a large shrub or evergreen to 14’, or a shade or ornamental tree with a trunk diameter up to four inches.

Criteria for Transplant

Any size tree can be transplanted, but not every tree is a candidate. The question is whether the tree will survive and thrive. Although a 90” hydraulic tree spade can comfortably move a 9” diameter, 35’ tall tree, this guideline may enlarge depending on season, weather, species, site and post-transplant care. Knowing what to do to assure survival of a mature tree takes years of experience. That is why successful transplanting is a job for professionals.

Trees can be moved on the same site, or from one site to another. In many cases trees can be moved 12 months a year, provided conditions are right. More than size and shape, location or site conditions, cost frequently determines whether a tree will be moved.

Structural Anchors

Trees are the structural anchors in a landscape. Fast-growing trees take years to mature, while slower-growing species like oaks and sugar maples take decades. So when you plan a construction project like a pool or addition, or want to expand a driveway or build a sun room, think about transplanting trees already on site. Or if you’re building on a vacant site, think about how classy the new building will look if framed by newly planted mature trees. Also, consider how the gift of a mature tree may thrill that special person in your life.
